Deuteronomy 5:7 meaning and explanation

You shall have no other gods before Me.

Deuteronomy 5:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is addressing the gathered Israelites on the plains of Moab, retelling the covenant made at Horeb, and here he quotes the LORD's own words from the mountain. This is the first of the Ten Commandments, and it comes directly after God identifies Himself as the one who brought Israel out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
