Deuteronomy 7:2 meaning and explanation
and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.
Deuteronomy 7:2, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter Canaan. The verse follows God's promise to drive out seven nations, and it commands Israel to devote them to complete destruction, a Hebrew idea (herem) meaning something set apart for God, in this case for destruction, with no treaty and no mercy.
