Deuteronomy 9:1 meaning and explanation

Hear, O Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.

Deuteronomy 9:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses speaks to the Israelites on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan, as the generation that left Egypt gives way to the one about to enter the land. His opening call, Hear, O Israel, summons the whole people to listen, the same words that begin the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4.
