Ecclesiastes 1:14 meaning and explanation
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.
Ecclesiastes 1:14, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The Teacher, presented as a Davidic king in Jerusalem, has set out to test everything done under heaven by wisdom (verses 12 and 13). Here he reports his verdict: all that happens under the sun, that is, in the ordinary world of human effort, he found to be hevel, a Hebrew word meaning vapor, breath or emptiness, and reut ruach, a shepherding or grasping of wind, an image of labor that cannot be held onto.
