Ephesians 5:31 meaning and explanation

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Ephesians 5:31, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 while instructing Christian households in Ephesus, and the verse describes the leaving, uniting and one-flesh bond of marriage as God designed it from the beginning. Paul calls this a profound mystery (Greek mystērion, a hidden truth now revealed) and says he is really speaking about Christ and the church, so the marriage union becomes a picture of the Savior's self-giving love for His people.
