Esther 1:20 meaning and explanation

The edict the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom—and so all women, from the least to the greatest, will honor their husbands.”

Esther 1:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Memucan, one of Xerxes' seven closest advisors, is answering the king's question about what to do with Queen Vashti after she refused his summons. His concern is not Vashti alone but the example her refusal might set across the empire, so he proposes an unchangeable decree and predicts its effect: once the edict is heard everywhere, women from the least to the greatest will honor their husbands.
