Exodus 22:20 meaning and explanation

If anyone sacrifices to any god other than the LORD alone, he must be set apart for destruction.

Exodus 22:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from the covenant code given through Moses to Israel at Sinai, immediately after the command against oppressing foreigners and before the promise that God hears the cry of widows and orphans. The Hebrew verb here is charam, to devote something irrevocably, often rendered "set apart for destruction." In a world where neighboring peoples sacrificed to many gods, Israel's exclusive loyalty to the LORD was the foundation of the whole covenant.
