Exodus 22:4 meaning and explanation
If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession—whether ox or donkey or sheep—he must pay back double.
Exodus 22:4, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
This verse belongs to Israel’s case law given through Moses at Sinai, addressing a thief caught with the stolen animal still alive in his possession. Because nothing had yet been slaughtered or sold, the loss could be restored in kind, and the penalty was double rather than the fivefold or fourfold restitution required in verse 1.
