If the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges to determine whether he has taken his neighbor’s property.
Exodus 22:8, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
This verse continues the case law on property left with a neighbour for safekeeping. If the goods were stolen and the thief could not be found, the householder who had been entrusted with them had to come before the judges, here called elohim, a Hebrew word meaning God or gods but used in this setting for those who render judgment.
