Exodus 23:21 meaning and explanation

Pay attention to him and listen to his voice; do not defy him, for he will not forgive rebellion, since My Name is in him.

Exodus 23:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God is speaking to Israel at Sinai, promising that an angel will go ahead of them to guard the way and bring them into the land He has prepared. Verse 21 calls the people to heed this messenger's voice and not rebel against him, because "My Name is in him." The Hebrew word for angel, mal'ak, simply means messenger, and having God's Name in him marks this figure as bearing God's own authority and presence, so resisting him is resisting God.
