On this altar you must not offer unauthorized incense or a burnt offering or grain offering; nor are you to pour a drink offering on it.

The LORD is speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, giving instructions for the altar of incense that will stand inside the tabernacle, just outside the veil before the ark. This small gold covered altar has one purpose only: burning the fragrant incense that Aaron tends each morning and evening.
