Exodus 32:30 meaning and explanation

The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”

Exodus 32:30, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The day after the golden calf was destroyed and three thousand fell, Moses turns to the people with both a verdict and a promise. He names their sin plainly, then announces that he will go back up the mountain to seek atonement, using a Hebrew verb (kaphar) that means to cover or make reconciliation for sin.
