Ezekiel 24:18 meaning and explanation

So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And the next morning I did as I had been commanded.

Ezekiel 24:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Ezekiel has just been told that God will take his wife, "the desire of his eyes," and that he must not mourn publicly (verses 16 to 17). Here he reports the event plainly: he preached in the morning, his wife died that evening, and by the next morning he obeyed the command to grieve silently.
