But there are many people here, and it is the rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.

Ezra has just called the returned exiles to separate from their foreign wives, and the whole assembly is gathered in the open square of Jerusalem in the ninth month, the cold, wet season. The people agree with Ezra but answer practically: the crowd is large, the rain makes standing outdoors impossible, and the cases are too many to settle in a day or two.
