Ezra has returned from Babylon to rebuild worship in Jerusalem, and he finds that many returned exiles, including priests, have married women from the surrounding peoples. In this verse the appointed family heads finish the investigation begun in verse 16, completing the cases of all the men involved by the first day of the first month, roughly three months of work.
