Ezra 4:14 meaning and explanation

Now because we are in the service of the palace and it is not fitting for us to allow the king to be dishonored, we have sent to inform the king

Ezra 4:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These are the words of Rehum, Shimshai and their associates, officials settled in Samaria and the region west of the Euphrates, in a letter urging King Artaxerxes to halt Jerusalem's rebuilding. Their claim to be "in the service of the palace" is literally "we eat the salt of the palace," a Persian idiom for officials paid and bound by royal loyalty.
