Ezra 4:18 meaning and explanation

The letter you sent us has been translated and read in my presence.

Ezra 4:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Artaxerxes, the Persian king, is replying to a letter from officials west of the Euphrates who accuse the returning Jews of rebuilding a rebellious Jerusalem. Verse 18 is the king's acknowledgment that their letter was translated and read aloud before him, so his decision rests on a document he actually heard and understood.
