Galatians 4:17 meaning and explanation

Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.

Galatians 4:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul is writing to Gentile believers in Galatia who are being courted by teachers insisting they must keep the Jewish law. These teachers showed real enthusiasm for the Galatians, but Paul says the zeal was not good: their aim was to shut the Galatians out, isolating them from Paul and his gospel so that the converts would then be devoted to them instead.
