Genesis 1:16 meaning and explanation

God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well.

Genesis 1:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Genesis 1:16 continues the fourth day of creation, as God sets lights in the sky to govern day and night. The narrator, describing God's work from above, names the sun and moon only by their function, "greater light" and "lesser light," a phrasing that avoids the ordinary Hebrew names for these bodies, which were also names of deities worshiped by Israel's neighbors.
