Genesis 1:2 meaning and explanation
Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis 1:2, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The narrator pauses after the opening claim to describe the earth before God speaks. The Hebrew words tohu and bohu picture something unformed and empty, a shapeless waste rather than a battlefield or a fallen world.
