God is speaking to Abram in the covenant vision of Genesis 15, after telling him his descendants would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. Here God explains the timing of their return: it will happen in the fourth generation because the wrongdoing of the Amorites, the peoples already living in Canaan, has not yet reached its full measure.
