Genesis 21:3 meaning and explanation

And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.

Genesis 21:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God had told Abraham, before Isaac was conceived, to name the promised son Isaac (Genesis 17:19). The name comes from the Hebrew yitschaq, meaning "he laughs," echoing both Abraham's and Sarah's earlier laughter of disbelief and the joy Sarah voices in verse 6.
