Genesis 26:33 meaning and explanation

So he called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the city is Beersheba.

Genesis 26:33, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaac has just come up to Beersheba, where God renewed the promise made to Abraham, and his servants have found water in a well they dug. He names it Shibah, a Hebrew word sounding like both “oath” and “seven,” which fits the oath just sworn between Isaac and Abimelech and the seven ewe lambs of the earlier Abraham story.
