Genesis 29:15 meaning and explanation

Laban said to him, “Just because you are my relative, should you work for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”

Genesis 29:15, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jacob has arrived in Haran, fleeing his brother Esau and staying with his uncle Laban, who welcomed him as "my own flesh and blood." After a month of unpaid help, Laban speaks this line. It sounds generous, but it also sets a price on family loyalty: Jacob is a guest and a relative, yet Laban turns the relationship into a wage negotiation.
