Genesis 31:39 meaning and explanation
I did not bring you anything torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was stolen by day or night.
Genesis 31:39, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jacob is speaking to Laban in the hill country of Gilead, defending twenty years of service after Laban accused him of stealing. In that culture a shepherd was normally expected to cover losses himself, but Jacob says he went further: he absorbed the cost of animals torn by wild beasts and also paid for anything stolen, whether by day or night.
