Genesis 31:47 meaning and explanation

Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.

Genesis 31:47, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Laban and Jacob have just piled stones as a covenant witness after a tense confrontation over Laban's daughters, flocks, and household gods. Both men name the same heap: Laban speaks Aramaic, Jegar-sahadutha, while Jacob uses the Hebrew equivalent, Galeed, and both names mean "heap of witness." The double naming marks the meeting point of two related peoples with different tongues, and it seals a treaty in which each man promises not to cross the mound to harm the other, calling on God as witness.
