Genesis 32:20 meaning and explanation
You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.”
Genesis 32:20, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jacob is speaking to his servants as he prepares to meet Esau, the brother he wronged twenty years earlier by taking his blessing. Fearing Esau's four hundred men, Jacob sends wave after wave of livestock as a gift ahead of him, and verse 20 gives his reasoning: the gift goes first to appease Esau, so that afterward Jacob can face him and perhaps be accepted.
