Genesis 35:1 meaning and explanation

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

Genesis 35:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God speaks to Jacob after the violent events at Shechem, directing him back to Bethel, the place where he had seen the stairway to heaven years earlier while fleeing Esau. The command to arise and settle there calls Jacob to return to the site of his first encounter with God and to build an altar, making his faith visible and permanent rather than a memory from a crisis long past.
