Genesis 35:18 meaning and explanation

And with her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni. But his father called him Benjamin.

Genesis 35:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Rachel is dying in childbirth on the road near Ephrath, later called Bethlehem, as Jacob's family travels from Bethel. With her last breath she names the child Ben-oni, a Hebrew name meaning "son of my sorrow." Jacob renames him Benjamin, commonly understood as "son of the right hand," a name of honor and hope rather than grief.
