Genesis 35:20 meaning and explanation

Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it marks Rachel’s tomb to this day.

Genesis 35:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jacob has just buried Rachel, his beloved wife, who died giving birth to Benjamin on the road near Ephrath, later called Bethlehem. Setting up a pillar, a standing stone, over her grave was a common way in that world to mark and honor a burial site, and the narrator notes that the marker was still known in the writer's own day.
