Genesis 37:3 meaning and explanation

Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons, because Joseph had been born to him in his old age; so he made him a robe of many colors.

Genesis 37:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jacob, called Israel here, favored Joseph because he was the son of his old age, born to Rachel, the wife he loved. The robe, a long garment reaching to the wrists and ankles, likely marked Joseph as one exempt from heavy labor and set apart for a special place in the family.
