Hirah, Judah's friend, is retracing the road to Timnah to pay the woman Judah slept with and recover the pledge Judah left: his seal, cord and staff. The Hebrew word here is qedeshah, a woman attached to a shrine, which is why the men of the place answer that no such woman has been there.
