Genesis 39 opens by placing Joseph in Egypt, far from his father's house. His brothers had sold him, and the Ishmaelites (traders, called Midianites elsewhere in Genesis) brought him down to Egypt, where Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him as a slave.
