Genesis 44:22 meaning and explanation

So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’

Genesis 44:22, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Judah is speaking to Joseph, whom the brothers still do not recognize, in the Egyptian official's house after the silver cup was found in Benjamin's sack. Recalling their earlier conversation, Judah explains why Benjamin had been kept back: their elderly father Jacob is bound to the boy, the last surviving son of his beloved Rachel, and believes Joseph himself is dead.
