Judah is speaking to Joseph in Egypt, retelling the earlier conversation between the brothers and their father Jacob. Joseph had demanded that Benjamin come down if they wanted more grain, and Judah now quotes the brothers' reply to Jacob: they cannot return without the youngest brother, because the powerful Egyptian official refused to see them otherwise.
