Genesis 47:4 meaning and explanation

Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, since the famine in the land of Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your servants to settle in the land of Goshen.”

Genesis 47:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joseph's brothers are speaking to Pharaoh in Egypt, having come from Canaan because the famine has left them no pasture. Their opening words are careful and humble: they describe themselves as servants and their stay as temporary, a sojourn rather than a claim on the land.
