Genesis 48:6 meaning and explanation

Any children born to you after them shall be yours, and they shall be called by the names of their brothers in the territory they inherit.

Genesis 48:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jacob, old and near death in Egypt, is formally adopting Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, so they will share directly in the inheritance of Israel's tribes. Verse 6 covers any further sons Joseph might have: those children remain Joseph's own and will be counted under the names of Ephraim and Manasseh, receiving land within their brothers' tribal territories rather than founding separate tribes.
