Genesis 49:33 meaning and explanation
When Jacob had finished instructing his sons, he pulled his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and he was gathered to his people.
Genesis 49:33, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jacob, dying in Egypt, has just finished blessing his twelve sons and asking them to bury him in the cave at Machpelah, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah lie buried. The verse closes the long life of the patriarch with quiet, deliberate detail: he draws his feet onto the bed, breathes his last, and is "gathered to his people." That phrase is an old Hebrew way of speaking about death and burial, expressing reunion with ancestors rather than describing a location.
