Habakkuk 2:13 meaning and explanation

Is it not indeed from the LORD of Hosts that the labor of the people only feeds the fire, and the nations weary themselves in vain?

Habakkuk 2:13, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Habakkuk has just pronounced woe on the one who builds a city by bloodshed (verse 12), and verse 13 gives the reason that such labor is futile. The LORD of Hosts, the commander of heaven's armies, is the one who frustrates human striving: the peoples' toil only feeds the fire, and the nations exhaust themselves for nothing.
