Hebrews 11:23 meaning and explanation

By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after his birth, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were unafraid of the king’s edict.

Hebrews 11:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The writer is recalling Exodus 2, where Moses' mother and father hid their newborn son for three months rather than obey Pharaoh's order to drown Hebrew baby boys in the Nile. The Greek word for "beautiful" here, asteios, can mean lovely or fine, and Exodus also says the child was good; the point is that his parents saw something worth protecting and acted on it.
