Hebrews 9:17 meaning and explanation
because a will does not take effect until the one who made it has died; it cannot be executed while he is still alive.
Hebrews 9:17, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The writer is explaining why Christ had to die, and he plays on the Greek word diatheke, which can mean either a covenant or a will. In verses 16 and 17 he uses the everyday sense: a will only takes effect once the person who made it has died, and it cannot be executed while he is still alive.
