Hosea 11:8 meaning and explanation

How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred!

Hosea 11:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God speaks here, and the ache in his voice follows the warning of judgment just before it. Ephraim is another name for Israel, the northern kingdom, and Admah and Zeboiim were towns destroyed alongside Sodom and Gomorrah, so the question is whether Israel will simply be wiped out.
