Hosea 5:3 meaning and explanation

I know all about Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now, O Ephraim, you have turned to prostitution; Israel is defiled.

Hosea 5:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God speaks through Hosea to the northern kingdom, called Ephraim after its leading tribe, and to Israel as a whole. The charge is spiritual adultery: the people have turned to Canaanite gods and to foreign alliances instead of the LORD, so the prophet calls it prostitution.
