Isaiah 30:22 meaning and explanation

So you will desecrate your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like menstrual cloths, saying to them, “Be gone!”

Isaiah 30:22, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah has just promised that God's people will hear a voice behind them directing them in the right way (verses 20 to 21). Now that guidance bears fruit: they treat their silver and gold plated idols as something ritually unclean and worthless, tossing them out like a soiled cloth and saying "Be gone." The Hebrew word for the cloth is a term for menstrual impurity, deliberately shocking language that marks idolatry as defiling rather than merely mistaken.
