Isaiah 31:1 meaning and explanation

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in their abundance of chariots and in their multitude of horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One of Israel; they do not seek the LORD.

Isaiah 31:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah is speaking to Judah and its leaders in the eighth century BC, as Assyria threatens and Egypt looks like the only hope. Going down to Egypt meant seeking military help, and the prophet names the real problem: trust placed in horses, chariots and horsemen rather than in the Holy One of Israel.
