Isaiah 37:1 meaning and explanation

On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.

Isaiah 37:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Hezekiah has just heard the Rabshakeh's field commander deliver Assyria's taunt outside Jerusalem's walls, threatening the city with destruction and mocking the God of Israel. Tearing his clothes and putting on sackcloth are public signs of grief, alarm and repentance, and the king goes straight into the house of the LORD rather than answering the threat with a military plan.
