Isaiah 37:29 meaning and explanation

Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’

Isaiah 37:29, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from the LORD through the prophet Isaiah, addressed to Sennacherib king of Assyria, whose army stands outside Jerusalem and whose envoy has mocked the living God. The hook and bit are images drawn from the taming and leading of animals, and Assyrian royal inscriptions themselves describe captives being led by cords or hooks.
