Isaiah 38:14 meaning and explanation

I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.”

Isaiah 38:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Hezekiah speaks these words in the psalm he wrote after his illness and recovery (verses 9 to 20). Looking back on his sickness, he describes how his grief had reduced him to wordless animal sounds: the chirp of a swallow or crane, the moan of a dove.
