Isaiah 44:18 meaning and explanation

They do not comprehend or discern, for He has shut their eyes so they cannot see and closed their minds so they cannot understand.

Isaiah 44:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In context, the LORD speaks through Isaiah to Israel about idol makers and worshipers. Verse 18 follows the picture of a craftsman who burns half a log for warmth and bread, then bows to the other half and prays, "Save me." The prophet says such people cannot see the absurdity of their own actions, and he traces this blindness to God, who has shut their eyes and closed their minds.
