Isaiah 44:20 meaning and explanation
He feeds on ashes. His deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”

Isaiah has just pictured a craftsman who burns half a log for warmth and bread, then bows to the other half and prays, "Save me" (verses 16 and 17). Verse 20 draws the conclusion: the idolater feeds on ashes, taking in what cannot nourish him.
